While surfing is a fun and healthy way to enjoy the beach, it can be a lot more complicated than it appears from the shore. If you are considering hopping on a board for the first time, these three tips will help you stay safe while learning the ropes.

1. The Beach - Take the time to research good beginner beaches in your area. While the waves may not be the most thrilling, you will find more use in smaller, steady waves that allow you to learn with as little trouble as possible.

2. Courtesy - Remaining courteous is good advice for any surfer regardless of skill level, but it is especially smart for beginners. When learning any new skill, you will make mistakes. Staying a healthy distance from more experienced surfers not only helps ensure you will not get in anyone’s way, but it also helps lower the risk of you or another surfer getting hurt.

3. Your Board - Go for a soft-top board. As a beginner, you are more than likely going to get hit with your board as you lose balance and a wave knocks it into your chest or face. A soft-top will make the hit much easier to absorb.
