Common Jean Cuts for Men

The senior design director in charge of men’s pants and shorts and men’s denim at American Eagle Outfitters, Clint Groom brainstorms ideas for new styles and designs. Clint Groom was responsible for creating the idea of Flex Design, a revolutionary concept that provided men with stretch in their denim pants.

Men can choose from a wide variety of denim fits to ensure they get a pair of pants that suit their body shapes. Four common jeans cuts for men include:

1. Relaxed. These jeans are extremely versatile and can be worn by most body types since the fit is roomy and loose, from the waist to the leg opening. Despite the fact that they do not hug the body at all, relaxed jeans still appear fitted.

2. Straight cut. This classic look is popular in casual settings and is characterized by the consistent width featured throughout the legs. Men can check for this fit by comparing the width of the ankle area with that of the knee area. If they are the same, the jeans are straight cut.

3. Skinny. A highly fitted style, skinny jeans hug the body and have a tapered leg width that is smallest at the ankle. In most cases, this cut sits around the waist or a bit lower and is best suited for men who have a lean build.

4. Slim. Slim jeans are similar to skinny jeans in that the leg width tapers and is smallest at the ankle. However, this cut does not hug the body. Instead, it provides men with a tailored look that suits most body types.
